Candidates Tournament 2016

The Candidates Tournament determines the challenger for the World Chess Championship

The Candidates Tournament is a chess tournament organized by FIDE since 1950, as the final contest to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship. The winner of the Candidates earns the right to a match for the World Championship against the incumbent World Champion.

Qualification and format

The eight players qualify to the Tournament as follows: one player who lost the 2014 World Chess Championship match, two winners of the World Cup, two winners of the Grand Prix series, two players by rating and one is nominated by the organizers. Prize fund for the event (including the FIDE fee) is EUR534,000.  Format: Double round robin tournament (14 rounds)

2015 World Chess Blitz and Rapid Championship

World Chess Rapid and Blitz Championship determines the best in the world of fast chess.

Blitz Championship is a two-day event where game lasts 3 minutes (and 2 seconds are added with each move). It’s a 21-round Swiss-style tournament that determines the World Chess Blitz Champion.

Rapid Chess Championship is a three-day tournament where game lasts 15 minutes (with 10 seconds added after each move). It’s a 15-round Swiss style event that determines the World Chess Rapid Champion. 


In 2014, record 124 players took part in the tournament. The reigning champion Magnus Carlsen and his predecessor Vishy Anand headed the line-up of the world's best chess players. In 2014, the Championship was held in Dubai, UAE.

FIDE Grand Prix - Khanty-Mansyisk, Russia

Winners of the Grand Prix will have a shot at the Championship title in 2016.

Fourth and final leg of the 2014-2015 Grand Prix series will determine who of the world's top grandmasters will play in the Candidates Match 2016 and will have a chance to face the World Champion in the battle for the title.

After Baku, Tashkent, and Tbilisi, the final tournament will take place in Khanty-Mansyisk, Russia. Current number 2 in the world, Fabiano Caruana (IT) and 11 other top grandmasters will play for a place in Candidates.


4-leg tournament over two years features 16 of the world's best chess players.
